PLC Day

Why do your kids get out of school at 2:18 the last Tuesday of every month? The answer is for something VERY important!!!  The teachers are meeting in professional learning communities. In these meetings teachers get to work with their grade level peers and in vertical teams (with teachers from other grade levels.) Each year the grade level teams set goals that they want their students to meet throughout the school year. We also have two school goals. The first is that we will comprehend what we read (READ, READ, and DISCUSS books with your child!!) and the second is that we know our basic math factsJ

We love guided reading!!!!

Did you know that your kindergarten kids are becoming EXCELLENT readers?!? We practice our reading skills in a variety of ways every day…..one VERY important way we do this is through guided reading.  This is a time when kids are grouped together that are reading at similar levels. We follow the Jan Richardson guided reading format to plan our lessons and your kindergarteners are doing a GREAT job!!! I thought it would be great to walk through a lesson and explain every wonderful thing they are doing!!!

First, we review 3 high-frequency words. These are words that we have already learned in previous lessons and are using in the classroom. Your kindergarten kid gets out their black marker and write each word (we call them TOP SECRET words) because Mrs. Schroeder wants to see what each child knows!!

l-i-k-e....like!!!!

Next, we read a book. We look at the book before we begin to predict and locate words and learn any new language that might be in the story. We read both fiction and informational texts at guided reading!! After we look at the book, we READ!!! While reading Mrs. Schroeder listens to each child read and helps them through any places they may be struggling. There are times when we need to look at the picture, look at the sounds, or check the high-frequency word. These are all strategies that help us read. After we are done reading we discuss the story. We discuss strategies that helped us read words!!

Sounding out the word 'ant'

That is a high-frequency word!!!

I know that word!!

After reading we learn a new high-frequency word. This word is in the story we read. Mrs. Schroeder builds the word with magnet letters and then tries to TRICK us!! She usually isn’t successful because these kids are to smart!!!! I remove a letter and ask, “What’s missing?” and the kids say the letter missing and then we spell the word again. Then each child gets their own letters to build the word and they mix it, fix it, and spell it. At the end of this time we write the words.

At the end of the lesson we switch it up!! Some days we build words using our sound boxes. We have to listen for the sounds and sound out the words ALL BY OURSELVES!! Other days we do guided writing. During this time we plan and write a sentence. The sentence has some words we have to sound out and it ALWAYS has the word we learned that day!!!!

I like that big bug. Good job Lily!!

We like the bugs. Good job Willow!!

I like the bug. Good job Sophie!

I like a bug. Great job Brylee!!

That is what we do EVERY day in guided reading. It is a favorite time for everyone!!! Remember to READ with your child EVERY night so they can show you what they can do!!!!!
